Nigella Sativa or Black seed which is a traditional herb in the Middle East, is used for a variety of illness and a main staple in most homes. For over 2000 years, the herb has been used to treat everything from Asthma to urinary tract infections and this study only emphasizes its importance.
Black Seed not only inhibits pancreatic cells, but inhibits the development of pancreatic cells. Due to the fact that Black seed has anti-inflammatory properties, the pancreatic tumors were reduced. As all pancreatic tumors start with inflammation.according to the researchers at the Kimmel Cancer Center, in Jefferson.. There were test in the past on black seed in the treatment of colon and pancreatic cancers.
Hwyda Arafat, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of Surgery at the Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, said that “Thymoquinone, the major constituent of the oil extract from a Middle Eastern herbal seed called Nigella sativa, exhibited anti-inflammatory properties that reduced the release of inflammatory mediators in pancreatic cancer cells.”
Dr. Arafat also went on to tell that Black Seed a common herb used in Middle Eastern societies helped to treat a wide array of diseases including some anti-inflammatory ones. In animal studies, the animals were treated with thymoquinone and 67 percent of the tumors were shrunken. The level of pro-inflammatory cytokins in the tumors were reduced significantly also.
Inflammation has been reported to be a major complication in all Pancreatic Cancers and the results of this study and the use of Black Seed with its many anti-inflammatory properties.
“Not only patients with chronic pancreatitis could benefit from this, but also several other groups with risk of development or recurrence of pancreatic cancer, such as high-risk family members and post-surgical patients. These potent effects show promise for the herb as a potential preventive and therapeutic strategy for pancreatic cancer. More importantly, the herb and oil are safe when used moderately, and have been used for thousands of years without reported toxic effects.” Dr. Arafat said.
